Thanks for getting in touch Diane - it's very much appreciated! You can setup your own fundraising page for VESL by going to justgiving.com/vesl/Raisemoney. VESL is already registered with Justgiving.com so it's free for you to setup and anything you raise for VESL via the site is automatically sent through to the Charity. Justgiving.com have a number of ways that you can integrate your fundraising page into popular social media sites such as facebook too - click here for more info on adding a donate page to your facebook profile. You can also setup TextGiving which allows people to donate by texting your reference and their donation amount to the justgiving text number - more info here. You can read through our projects page, download our info pack (which contains an outline of our programme and a few case studies etc.) or you can email enquiries@vesl.org with any specific questions you might have. If you send us your application form we could invite you to attend an info & selection event where you'd get a chance to meet some of the VESL team and hear from a past volunteer. We also run a Q & A session at those events too.

Having lived within the local community during your project you tend to settle in quickly, picking up local customs and gain snippets of language along the way. It certainly gives you a desire to see more of the country and many of our volunteers stay on to travel independently after their project has ended. If you’re staying within Thailand you’d be able to stay on under your existing visa until it’s expiry date (can be up to 12 months multiple entry visa). If you’re planning to head to other countries in the region (Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma or Myanmar) you would need to gain appropriate visas (usually prior to departing from the UK) but some have short entry visas that you can gain at overland borders if you only intend to spend a couple of weeks there. You will need to check out the visa requirements for each country based on your own plans.

I am intereseted in volunteering in Thailand but would also like to do further travelling after the project has finished. I was just wondering if I would have to get a seperate visa for every country I visit?

Wow, I’d completely forgotten about lemon puffs – where would you be without them in Sri Lanka?! I recently spent some time in Tanzania and was advised to give household essentials like tea/coffee/sugar as gifts. It seemed a bit strange as we got them from the market in brown paper bags, but went down a treat.
